Repuked - Dawn of Reintoxication
Angry Metal Guy 50
A few years ago I had a dog. And because of him, I’ll never have another. We suffered together through a couple of destroyed doors, one homemade doghouse,1 several dead chickens2, and three torturous moves. I only had him for eight years, but it felt like centuries. No one could tell me what he was or how old he was. He was equal to “The Beast” from The Sandlot, but with Brendle fur and a purple tongue. To say I hated that dog is an understatement. Yet, when I put him down and then buried him, I missed him. And, now as I remember him, I recall when his arthritic joints would creak and he’d quietly grunt to his feet when he heard the cats puking up their food. See, Keto liked cat food—fresh from the bowl or regurgitated. Sometimes even shit up. But regurgitated was his favorite. Before anyone could clean up the cat’s mess, he had eaten it. Then, moments later, Keto would throw it up—only to eat it again. The circle of life, one might say.
I hope this story finds you munching on your breakfast and drinking a warm pumpkin spice latte with the morning news. Here’s Repuked with the weather.
If you don’t know Sweden’s Repuked,3 they’re creators of some of the more unpleasant song titles I’ve read in a while. Songs from previous releases include “Cuntroast,” “Stinkhole,” “I Want to Puke on You,” and the back-to-back beauties, “Standing by the Roadside…” and “…Fucking Something Dead.” As you can tell, they don’t play your typical Swedeath. If I didn’t know any better, I’d think that Repuked hailed from California. After all, they have many of the same traits as bands like Autopsy and Impaled. They combine the body-dragging gravel-ness of the former with the grotesque immaturity of the latter. Which means, this is right up Grier‘s alley.4
From the band’s description, I knew what I was getting into. Dawn of Reintoxication says it all—just as much as Pervertopia and Up From the Sewers. Not to mention that songs like bookends, “Livers Bleed” and “Morbid Obsessions,” visibly drip of the shit. Both take their sickening time and both tread through knee-high ooze. The former in its intro, the latter its conclusion. The closer feels like lying in a gutter after a vicious beating, as you slowly breathe your last breath. I mean, not in the way as Autopsy‘s “Sadistic Gratification,” but, you know, sorta.
But, for every slow-mover, there’s a punchy one. The title goes to the duo, “Kick Fuck” and “Vodka Til the Grave.” While these songs aren’t amazing, their choruses are addictive. In particular, the former’s punkish attitude, which will have you yelling/laughing the words every time you hear it. That also goes for “Retribution from Behind” and “Repulsive Erected and Anally Infected”—well the laughing part. Lyrics aside, these last two tracks have more going on than the rest. Between the interesting riffs, the slow-to-fast pacing, and the Exhumed-ish bark-shriek combos, they’re the more diverse of the bunch.
And between it all, you have the gnarly “Shitfister,” the in-your-face “Sewer Rain,”5 and the heart-beating title track, that reminds me of the opener to Impaled‘s Death After Life. Dawn of Reintoxication is a shit show with lots of shit going back up someone’s bum. It has “qualities” to it that remind me of why I love bands like Autopsy, Carcass, Exhumed, Ghoul, and Impaled. But, like Repuked‘s last two releases, this one is no more than run-of-the-mill. That said, I still think it’s fun and I’ll still run around the apartment kick-fucking anything I see.
