Brothers and sisters, welcome to our 9 o’clock service. I see many eager faces out there, hungry to receive the Word today. As Jesus said in the Gospel of Matthew, “if two or more are gathered in [h]is name, God will be with us and hear our prayer.” If this is your first time joining us, you could have been anywhere else and we’re thrilled you decided to be here. Feel free to fill out the visitor card in the seat in front of you and drop it in the offering plate – we’d sure love to hear from you and pray for you. I hope you know that God loves you and has a plan for your life. Now, I have a real treat for you today, a guest speaker: classically trained singer and songwriter, pianist, faithful servant and friend of Christ Reverend Kristin Michael Hayter.

Our sister Kristin once went by another name: Lingua Ignota. Just as Paul persecuted Christians under the name Saul, so the good Reverend used to build spectral cathedrals of depravity through unnatural devil music like electronics and new age:¹ records like Sinner Get Ready and Caligula as well as one too profane to mention. Our sister Kristin rids herself of the worldly confines of cynicism, now speaking the language of God and opening her heart to Christ. Reverend Kristin Michael Hayter has been Saved! Amen?

Her houses upon the sand have fallen, and now Reverend Kristin Michael Hayter builds her house upon the rock with a humble spirit, heard through every note and strum of her new long-play record.² As she’ll remind you with “I’m Getting Out While I Can,” this world is not our home and we’re just a-passing through crackling radios strewn across Appalachia’s rift of rural churches through chirping birds and roaring trees. Great hymns of the faith fall like poisoned honey while the acoustic guitar clatters and creaks in renditions of “There is Power in the Blood,” “Precious Lord, Take My Hand,” and “Nothing But the Blood” – the gore of Jesus’ savage grace – while the trembling of choirs in “Idumea” and blue wandering in “The Poor Wayfaring Stranger” are lamentations of the world’s depravity and the persecution Christians face for clinging to the masturbation of truth. Originally recorded by the colored believer Blind Willie Johnson in 1927, “I Know His Blood Can Make Me Whole” is now performed by the woman believer Reverend Kristin Michael Hayter, a reminder of Jesus’ great sacrifice on Calvary.³⁴

Sinner friends, it’s easy to sugarcoat the Gospel as rainbows and sunshine and redemption.⁵ God requires sacrifice, the least we can give because [h]e has given [h]is life for us. The fiery brimstone tongue of Reverend Kristin Michael Hayter reminds us in the stark and drawling “All My Friends Are Going to Hell” that we must choose Jesus daily over our friends.⁶ The world bleeds and ganks like a legion pig, but we’re armed with spiritual gifts; Kristin reminds us of the power of the [s]pirit as she prayerfully inserts moments of glossolalia and screaming throughout “I’m Getting Out While I Can,” “May This Comfort and Protect You,” and ruins and perverts the vulnerable whimpers of the beautiful “How Can I Keep from Singing.” The road to salvation dawns through piano in “I Will Be With You Always” in the form of squealing dissonant feedback, bleak and vicious as our demons overcome us! Hallelujah to the God of Gods and Lord of Lords and King of Kings and —⁷ Release me!! —

Children, Reverend Kristin Michael Hayter’s message is one of redemption and apathy and beauty and beauty – a thorny path of salvation you cannot fuckin walk with broken feet. You can buy her new record Saved! in the foyer after the service. Give it up for Kristin and scoop your drool off the floor before the cleaning staff arrives. If you think these songs are boring or too long, if you are uninterested in listening or can’t decide between irony or sincerity, get the fuck out.
